Skip a harsh chemical peel for a pineapple-enzyme facial at a new day spa in town.
Tammy and her daughter Leah Thurman opened Country Pure Day Spa in June and provide spa treatments with all-natural products instead of chemicals. Their services includes a variety of facials, waxing, eyelash extensions, body scrubs and lip treatments.
“Why wouldn’t you want to be natural- instead of chemical-laden?” Tammy Thurman asked.
The spa opened in a converted house near West Montezuma Avenue and North Linden Street. Every room is warm and inviting, and on the back deck, clients can enjoy drinks overlooking a fountain.
The main items missing compared with a standard spa are synthetic scents, propylene glycol and petroleum products.
“You shouldn’t put anything on your skin you wouldn’t put in your mouth,” Leah Thurman said, because skin soaks up the chemicals, and they stay in the body.
The Thurmans started providing spa services five years ago out of their home in Mancos. Moving to Cortez allowed them to expand their services.
For full body exfoliation, the spa now offers body brushing that helps to remove dry skin and then it is followed with full body hydration with lotion or oil.
For chocoholics, the spa plans to offer chocolate-scented treatments. The spa also sells a chocolate milk bath soak, made in-house, that helps to reduce swelling and stiffness.
They are now working with Tawnie Sheets, a massage therapist, offers Swedish, deep-tissue and sports injury massages. She also offers massages for expectant mothers and those who have recently given birth. Sheets will also allow clients to take a 25-minute nap after a massage.
The spa also plans to start doing pregnancy belly castings made out of plaster. These castings are growing in popularity as a form of pregnancy memorabilia.
The business is also still looking to hire two hair stylists and add pedicure and manicure services.
