Cutter Higgins displays his grand champion rocket at the Montezuma County Fair.

When it comes to winning Grand Champion ribbons, 9-year-old 4-H’er Cutter Higgins has a knack.

Competing in rocketry on July 30, Higgins was named Grand Champion in the launch category after his rocket landed closer to its launch site than any competing rocket.

Higgins built two rockets for this year’s fair, including a small military rocket and a larger white rocket.

“The rocket launches went really good,” said Higgins.

In all, Higgins completed two launches at Parque de Vida before travelling to the Montezuma County Fairgrounds to put his rockets are on display.

As for Higgins’ turkeys, the birds arrived at the Fairgrounds on the morning of July 30 and are currently housed in a pen near other turkeys and chickens.

Appearing clean and pearl white thanks to yesterday’s washing, Higgins’ birds stood out due to their large size. According to Higgins, birds are not judged solely on size however, and thus, a Grand Championship is far from guaranteed.

Even so, Higgins said that he expects his turkeys to place well.

With poultry judging set to begin at 10 a.m. on July 31, Higgins planned to spend the rest of July 30 to exploring the Fair’s many exhibits and checking out the water park.

Higgins also planned to spend time with members of his family including his father and uncle. Higgins will spend the evening of July 31 in a travel trailer that is currently parked at the Fairgrounds.
