Friday, Saturday Aug. 22-23

Biennial Dolores Mountain Quilters Quilt Show Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Dolores Community Center. The show will feature over 100 quilts. Admission is $3 for those 16 years and older and free for kids. Info.: 560-4426.

SATURDAY, AUG. 23

Southwest Colorado Wine, Food and Art Festival sponsored by the Cortez Civitan Club from 1 to 6 p.m. at Parque de Vida in Cortez. Music, wine tasting, food vendors and local artists. Wine tasting tickets are $20 before the event and $25 at the gate. Entrance is free for nondrinkers. Information: 882-4585.

The 6th Annual Medicine Horse 'Masters' Golf tournament registration is 8 a.m. with a Scramble Format/Shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. at the South Forty (Par 3) Course, 25500 Road H, Cortez. Poultry Slaughter Class from 8 to 11 a.m. Learn how to humanly slaughter and process broiler chickens. Class size is limited, preregistration by Aug. 21 is required. The cost ranges from $15 to $30. Proceeds will go to Montezuma County 4-H Poultry member activities. Call 970-560-0781 to register.

The Country Girls Reunion will be at the Lewis-Arriola Community Center from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a potluck at noon. All families and friends of The Country Girls are welcome. The group started in the mid 1950s. Information: 247-0299.

Wild Mushroom Hunting with John Sir Jesse near Lizard Head Pass. Learn about mushrooms, their habitats and edibility. The group will meet at 8:30 a.m. about an hour north of Cortez. Participation is limited and registration is required. Call 970-728-0639.

Sunday, Aug. 24

The Bridge Emergency Shelter is holding its 2nd Annual Homeless Awareness Walk. Registration 4:30 to 5 p.m. at the Playground Shelter at Parque de Vida. This one-mile walk is open to all. Wildfire Preparedness for Professionals seminar will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at First National Bank of Cortez. Seminar is catered toward realtors, builders, insurance agents, landscapers, lenders and all professionals who can influence rural residents. Info.: 564-7860.

The Four Corners Lecture Series, the Hisatsinom Chapter of the Colorado Archaeology Society, presents Dr. Jeffrey Dean on Tuesday, at 7 p.m. at the Methodist Church, 515 Park Street in Cortez, to discuss "New Research on Old Dates: Dendroarchaeology of Pueblo III Kiva Construction on Mesa Verde."
