Four tournaments into the season, the Montezuma-Cortez High School golf team has yet to play up to its potential.
Competing at the Pagosa Springs Golf Club on Aug. 21, the Panthers finished second as a team, shooting a combined total of 239. Durango High School won the five-team tournament with a combined score of 234.
Leading the way for the Panthers was senior Hayden Plewe, who, despite rough conditions, carded a 77, which stood as the second best score in the tournament.
Carding the second best score for the Panthers was senior Tristan Shelby, who shot a season-best score of 78.
“Tristan Shelby played well,” said M-CHS assistant coach Todd Plewe. “It was good to see.”
Other varsity scorers for the Panthers included senior Ryan Aiken, who shot an 84, senior Levi Gross, who shot an 87 and freshman Cristoffer Rudosky, who shot an 88.
“We just have to work on being more consistent,” said Plewe. “As a group, the boys struggled a bit.”
Next up for the Panthers will be a tournament at Devil’s Thumb Golf Club in Delta on Aug. 27.
“The goal for our team should be to shoot a 232,” said Plewe.
“We need to focus on posting a better score as a team.”
