Looking back a decade

I failed to write up a column last time because I was having a difficult time healing after major abdominal surgery. The following took place 10 years ago.

Milton Benjamin Hurst passed away at the age of 68. He was a long time resident of Mancos and a member of VFW Post Bo. 5231.

Dolores Martinez has been recognized as Paraprofessional of the Year by the Colorado Association for Bilingual Education. She has taught in the bilingual education program in Mancos 17 years.

Lola Roberts, 66, of Mancos was one of the winners of $30,000 in the Colorado Lottery's scratch game.

Memorial services have been held for George Wayne Bauer, 79. He was born in Denver to George Bauer and Inez Shacklett. He is survived by his wife Clare Bauer and daughters Anne McGregor and Susan Weller.

The women of Chapter BD of the PEO presented a $750 grant to Sandy Conway Andricci, The presentation was made by Esther Cook, Kate Ott and Roma Ewing.

Randy Halls and Luther Elliss were Mancos' representatives on the all San Juan Basin League first team. Hal Bayles and Damien Marcum received honorable mention.

Ellen Paquin has been awarded Realtor of the Month for October. She has been with Prudential Triple S Realty since 1988.

Since many parents are confused over vacation days the Mancos School Board has stated that Thanksgiving vacation days are November 23 & 24. Christmas vacation days are December 22-January 2.

Harry Knight was the winner in turkey-give-away at Hamburger Haven. He won a turkey of up to twenty pounds from the P&D Grocery.

Ben Shaw of the Mancos Valley Bank has announced the appointment of Deanne Acott as vice president in charge of the newly formed Agricultural Service Department.

Kenny Prevett has taken the pastorate at the First Baptist Church in Mancos.

Darrel Ellis is a longtime historian of the Mancos Valley.
