Richard G. Ballantine has been appointed to the board of Colorado Humanities, the only Colorado nonprofit dedicated exclusively to supporting humanities education statewide.

Ballantine is the board chairman of Ballantine Communications Inc. He is also a farmer, journalist and dedicated philanthropist who was the publisher of The Durango Herald for 30 years.

Ballantine was appointed to the Colorado Humanities board by Gov. John Hickenlooper. He is one of six new board members – three who were elected, and three who were appointed. Other new members include Charles T. Bantis of Vectra Bank Colorado, Michel R. Dahlin of the University of Colorado-Denver, Greenwood Village attorney Thorvald Nelson, David Smith of Northwestern Community College and Paulette Grant Tate of NEX-U.

Colorado Humanities designs and implements school-based and community humanities education programs in literacy, poetry, history and more, working with statewide partners to tailor them to specific community needs. Ballantine sits on several boards of directors, including those of the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center and the Ballantine Family Fund. He was named the 2014 Citizen of the Year by the Durango Chamber of Commerce.
