A Mancos man was arrested Saturday, Oct. 11 after allegedly hitting a woman on the head with a hammer.
Austin T. Yeager, 18, of Mancos was arrested and charged with first degree assault and unlawful sexual contact, according to Mancos Marshal John L. Cox.
At 11:27 p.m. Saturday, Mancos Deputy Marshal Yvonne McClellan responded to a break-in alarm at Metallics West in the 600 block of North Main Street in Mancos.
An adult female covered in blood exited a door, and McClellan made contact with her. McClellan was told that the woman's ex-boyfriend had injured her and that he had left the business about 2 minutes before. An ambulance was called to the scene, and McClellan broadcast a description of the suspect.
While speaking with the victim, McClellan saw the suspect on foot nearby and took him into custody without incident.
Deputies from the Montezuma County Sheriff's Office and a Colorado State Patrol Trooper responded and assisted the Mancos Marshal's Office at the scene and at the emergency room.
The adult female was transported to Southwest Memorial Hospital, where she was treated for a concussion and cuts on her face and head. The female was released after treatment.
During her investigation, McClellan was told by the victim that she had been hit in the head by the suspect several times with a hammer. A hammer was found at the scene and collected as evidence.
