The 2A Regional champions secured their spot at the state marching band competition after winning first place in the Grand Junction competition, Oct. 16.
The band will compete for the state title on Oct. 27.
Heading to state is nothing new for band director Rodney Ritthaler. The M-CHS band has gone to the state competition 31 times in the past 33 years and won five titles, in 1982, 1983, 1992, 1997 and 2005.
Ritthaler said that if band members work hard, they could win again.
“The kids have worked really, really hard, and we have come a long way,” Ritthaler said. “If we can just make our music execution better, we could do it.”
Last year, the band placed second at the state competition.
This year’s performance is based on the popular Cirque du Soleil performance of “Dralion,” which combines the idea of a traditional Chinese circus with a modern circus.
“The kids gave a really good performance,” Ritthaler said.
