The Dolores School Board of Education will be busy tonight, Nov. 13, with three separate meetings.

The first, which starts at 5 p.m., will be a chance for the school board to interview potential school board candidates. Four applicants have turned in letters of interest to fill the vacant seat left open when School Board President Jon Kelly stepped down last month.

Those four applicants are: Joe Brunner, Dee Wyman, Ginny Johnson and Lenetta Shull.

Brunner said in his letter of interest that he has been in the community for over 40 years and attended Dolores Schools himself. He has also had two children complete school in Dolores, and another is still attending.

"I feel that this community is an excellent place to raise our families, and I want to be part of that process," Brunner wrote in his letter. "I am at a point in my life when I have the time to devote to community efforts."

Johnson said in her letter of interest that she has lived in the area since 2008 and has two small children that are enrolled in the Teddy Bear Preschool program. In the past, Johnson has served on the Dolores Public Library District.

"I would like to be involved in the decision making process for the district because my kids will be affected by every decision made," Johnson wrote.

Wyman has been a resident of Dolores for 15 years.

Shull cited her extensive knowledge of school policies and the Colorado Revised Statutes in her letter of interest.

"I can help you create and implement new projects that will enhance the performance of the staff and students," she wrote.

Board members are expected to interview the interested candidates from 5 to 6 p.m. At 6 p.m., board members will adjourn the interview meeting and reconvene for a policy meeting. At 7 p.m., board members will reconvene again for a regular board meeting. Once the regular meeting is called to order, the board members are expected to appoint a board member.

Once that is done, the new board member will be sworn in, and then there will be an election of board officers.

Board members are also expected to discuss the Colorado Measures of Academic Success and hear a construction project update.

"We have some good scores, it is something positive to talk about," Dolores School District Superintendent Scott Cooper said.

The science building is also still on track to be finished Dec. 15, Cooper said.

In addition, board members are expected to talk about the use of money from cell tower companies.

In addition, board members are expected to talk about a mill levy in the future. The current mill levy, which funds salaries and capital improvements, sunsets in 2016.

"We want to stay ahead of that and encourage voters to support us again," Cooper said.
