Emmy Award-winning correspondent Hattie Kauffman will be guest speaker at the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe’s annual fall College and Career Fair on Nov. 21, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Towaoc Recreation Center.

Kauffman has worked for ABC and CBS, and is thought to be the first Native American to file a report with a national network newscast. Having grown up on a reservation with six siblings amid poverty and alcoholism, she overcame adversity to achieve national fame. She will be speaking at the Tribe’s event to Native Americans who face similar obstacles, and seek inspiration for their scholarly and career ambitions. Being dealt a bad hand, she says, is no reason to fail in life.

Kauffman’s speech will begin at 10:30 a.m., and she will remain on hand for the remainder of the event to sign copies of her new memoir, “Falling Into Place,” and to meet with visitors. The public is welcome.
