Fire and ice fill the air as the Chrome Mafia float passes by the judges in the Parade of Lights in 2013.

Get ready for the brightest night of the year, Dec. 6, when the 4 Corners Board of Realtors sponsors the 25th annual Parade of Lights in downtown Cortez.

“This is our gift back to the communities we serve,” said Terry McCabe, chairwoman of 4 Corners Board of Realtors Parade of Lights.

Be ready to watch the Christmas displays roll down Main Street starting at 6 p.m.

The theme this year is “Rockin’ around the Christmas Tree,” and all local businesses and organizations are encouraged to attend.

As many as 70 floats have participated in the parade.

Applications to enter a float in the parade are available on Page 8B and at the Cortez Journal and the Century 21 West Slope Realty. There is no cost to enter the parade.

Those who enter are encouraged to turn in an application before Dec. 4.

McCabe said that over the years there have been many memorable parades. Last year, a fluffy, white snow fell.

“The flash mob dance was two or three years ago,” McCabe said. “That same year, there was a big float honoring all the teachers and educators in the area.”

This year, Kinder Morgan is the grand marshal.

“The grand marshal is typically a company, organization or person that has brought in a big contribution to the community,” McCabe said.

Cash prizes are given out in three different categories: commercial, nonprofit and other, such as schools and churches.
