Regional students graduate from FLC

In a ceremony on Dec. 20, more than 200 Fort Lewis College graduates and their families packed Whalen Gym for Fall Commencement.

Kalyn Boyer, of Mancos, graduated with a bachelor's degree in biology - general biology option .

Ericka Kelly, of Dolores, graduated with a bachelor's degree in English - English for secondary teachers option .

Caleb Valdez, of Cortez, graduated with a bachelor's degree in philosophy.

SCCC will offer nurse's aide program

A seven-week Certified Nurse Aide Training program will run Jan. 26 through March 17 at Southwest Colorado Community College's West Campus in Mancos.

The class will meet 8 to 11:45 a.m., Monday through Thursday.

The college will also hold another seven-week Certified Nurse Aide Training program at the college's East Campus in Durango, March 31 through May 15. Students will meet 8 to 11:45 a.m., Tuesday through Friday.

The classes are limited to 10 students each. Students must meet immunization requirements and pass a background check.

Southwest Colorado Community College serves residents in Archuleta, Dolores, La Plata, Montezuma and San Juan counties in Southwest Colorado and offers a variety of certificates and associate's degrees. The college provides education and training in academic, career and technical fields.

SJMA Winter Discovery Walk set

Join a naturalist from San Juan Mountains Association for a fun and educational snowshoe walk on Cherry Creek Road in the San Juan National Forest on Saturday, Feb. 7 from 10 a.m. to noon.

Explore the variety of trees in our area and see how they survive the winter as well as what critters depend on them for their own survival.

The walk is for ages 4 and up, accompanied by an adult. Snowshoes are provided for children.

Painted Turtle releases schedule

The Painted Turtle Studio has released its February schedule. Fees apply.

Fantasy Painting class will be on Thursdays from 3:45 to 5 p.m. on Feb. 5, 12, 19 and 26.

Mosaics for kids ages 7-13 will be Tuesdays from 3:45 to 5 p.m. on Feb. 3, 10, 17 and 24.

Digital Photography will be Thursdays, Feb. 5 through 26 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Clay Sculpture for Kids will be Fridays, 3:45-5 p.m.

Sculpt a Ceramic Heart and Paint will be Feb. 4 and 11, 6 to 8 p.m.

Mancos School plans open house

The Mancos School District Open House and Education Fair is Wednesday, Jan. 21 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Mancos Elementary School and the cafeteria.

Science fair projects completed by students in grades 5-8 will be available for public viewing.

Buy a loaded baked potato, dessert, and drink for $5 in the cafeteria from 5 to 7 p.m., proceeds benefit the eighth grade Grand Canyon Field Trip in May 2015.

Civil Rights show to open Jan. 23

Fifty-year Celebration of Civil Rights will be on display at the Mancos Visitor Center, starting Jan. 23. The show showcases the photography exhibit from the collection of Betsy Harris.

Free legal clinic at Mancos library

A free legal clinic for parties who have no attorney, will be featured from 2-4 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 12, and on the second Thursday of each month at the Mancos Public Library, 211 W. First St.

By computer link, volunteer attorneys will answer questions, help fill out forms, and explain the process and procedure for all areas of civil litigation, including family law, property law, probate law, collections, appeals, landlord-tenant law, small claims, veterans issues, and civil protection orders. Walk-ins are welcome, and everyone will be helped on a first-come, first-served basis.

Upcoming dates in 2015 are: Feb. 12; March 12; April 9; May 14; June 11; July 9; Aug. 13; Sept. 10; Oct. 8; Nov. 12; and Dec. 10.
