Mancos Days poster contest opens

The Mancos Days Planning Committee is seeking input from the community in coming up with a theme and artwork for the 56th annual Mancos Days Celebration festival on July 24-26. Typically, the posters are designed in-house, but the volunteer committee wanted to open up the festival design and theme this year. The contest is open to all ages.

Past themes included "Valley of the Silver Mountains" and "Bonnets and Cowboy Hats" and "Paint Your Wagon."

Bake sale to benefit the Mancos Library

Mancos Friends of the Library will hold its annual, all-day Valentine's Day Bake Sale on Saturday, Feb. 14. Goodies will be sold from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the library, 211 W. First St.

The group needs bakers and buyers for this tradition. Baked goods can be dropped off at the library on Friday, Feb. 13, from 3 to 5 p.m. or the morning of the sale.

Forest service offers seedlings, wildflowers

The Colorado State Forest Service and Dolores Conservation District, is accepting applications on a first-come, first-serve basis for more than 40 varieties of low-cost seedling trees and shrubs.

The CSFS Nursery also has added grasses and wildflowers to its growing stock. Seedlings ordered now will be distributed in the spring.

Coloradans interested in conservation goals such as creating natural windbreaks, improving wildlife habitat or reforesting properties impacted by wildfire or other natural disturbances are eligible to purchase the low-cost seedlings. CSFS Nursery Manager Josh Stolz says Colorado-grown species are adaptable, hardy and ideal for a variety of conservation uses.

The CSFS seedling tree program is intended to encourage Colorado landowners to plant seedling trees and shrubs for conservation purposes. Through a cooperative effort with Colorado State University Extension offices and county Conservation Districts throughout the state, about 5,000 Coloradans purchase CSFS seedling trees each year.

To purchase seedling trees from the CSFS, landowners must agree to use them only for conservation and not to resell them as living plants, but there is no minimum acreage requirement. A continually updated seedling inventory can be found at http://csfs.colostate.edu within the Seedling Tree Nursery tab.

For more information, contact the Conservation District at (970) 565-9045 Ext. 3 or the CSFS Durango District at (970) 247-5250.
