After an inconsistent start to its season, the Mancos High School girls basketball team has won three straight games and appears to be peaking at the right time.
Lady Jays defeat Bears
Playing its first game last week at home against Dolores on Feb. 20, Mancos used a balanced scoring attack to defeat their rivals 49-43. The Lady Jays victory marked their second of the season over the Lady Bears.
Sophomore forward Nicole Hess led the Lady Jays in scoring with 14 points, and senior shooting guard Taylor Goff added 11. Jessica Gutierrez, Andie Paschal and Brittney Peacock all scored eight.
Lady Jays defeat Ouray
Competing for the second time of the weekend at home against Ouray on Feb. 21, the Lady Jays rode a big fourth quarter to a 46-40 win.
Mancos led 23-20 at halftime and 31-30 entering the fourth quarter before finding their stride over the final eight minutes and wrapping up the win.
Goff led Mancos in scoring with 12 points, and Gutierrez and Peacock each scored 10.
With the win, Mancos improved to 8-10 on the season. The Lady Jays have now won three straight games.
The Lady Jays will open the Class 2A District 3 Tournament on the road against Ridgway on Feb. 27. Mancos is seeded fourth in the tournament.
