Main Street medical marijuana purveyor Durango Organics is now open for recreational shoppers.
Durango Organics is the fourth recreational marijuana shop in the city of Cortez to open since January.
The shop’s retail permit was approved by Cortez City Council in February, but in order to obtain a certificate of occupancy, some interior renovations needed to be made.
Owner Jonny Radding said the Durango Organics currently has 10 to 15 strains available on the recreational side, and a variety of edibles.
The medical marijuana portion of the business quietly opened to patients in December 2014. It is the Durango-based business’ first venture outside of La Plata County. Durango Organics grows all its product at its Durango headquarters.
“We’re pretty excited,” said Radding. “We’ve had people asking us for a while about when we were going to be open (for recreational) ... after we hung up the side up front and people are definitely noticing.”
The company applied for a retail license earlier in fall 2014, but ran into a zoning snag with the city because of a provision that disallowed retail marijuana sites within 1,500 feet of public parks. Durango Organics is around the corner from Parque de Vida. The city revised the park setback provision in November, and Durango Organic’s retail permit application was granted at the Feb. 3 Cortez City Council meeting.
The shop is at 1104 E. Main Street in Cortez.
