Cortez Sanitation District board members on Monday discussed a rate increase next year of $1 per month for wastewater treatment up to 5,000 gallons.

Board members Ryan Griglak and Tim Robinson were absent from the meeting.

The board held a preliminary discussion on the district’s 2017 budget. A public hearing on the budget will be held at a future meeting before the budget is due in the fall.

Board member Jim Candelaria requested a more structured pay scale for district employees. He said employees should be provided with a step system for pay raises, so they know exactly when they might be eligible for raises and how much a raise might be. The minimum starting wage for sanitation district employees is $14.50 per hour, said district superintendent Phil Starks.

Candelaria requested that Starks develop a pay scale before the budget is presented a second time to the board.

Board members agreed that they should come up with that pay scale before advertising to hire a district manager. The district’s former manager, Tim Krebs, died May 20 at age 46 after serving the district for 13 years.

The board tabled a discussion on hiring a district manager until a special meeting July 25 at 5:30 p.m.

Also Monday, the board approved a $33,259 pay request from SGM Engineering.
