A Denver publication named Durango the best small-town getaway in Colorado, citing its friendly atmosphere where waiters and customers might come together to celebrate Oktoberfest.

Durango recently earned a nod of approval from 5280 The Denver Magazine, which deemed the city of 17,000 No. 1 of "Seven Spectacular Small Town Getaways" in Colorado.

The write-up details ways to spend 36 hours in the city, lauding Durango for its eateries, historic hotels, galleries and outdoor recreation.

A four-year college and renowned railway within city limits may not be indicative of a small town, 5280 says, "but from old friends hugging at the Saturday morning farmers' market to your waiter telling you he'll see you at tomorrow's Oktoberfest party, it feels like one."

Praised for retaining old-time charm from its mining history "straight out of a Louis L'Amour novel," downtown favorites like Steamworks Brewing Co. and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad received mention, as well as the river trail along the Animas and the family-owned and operated James Ranch just north of bustling Main Avenue.
