Cydney McHenry finished fourth at the state track meet in the 300-meter hurdles (47.46) during her senior year at Dolores.

Cydney McHenry, a 2013 Dolores High School graduate, finished her junior season as a member of the Adams State Grizzlies women’s basketball team on Friday at Fort Lewis.

McHenry scored 21 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out five assists in the Grizzlies’ 75-62 loss to the Skyhawks in their final game.

And although her team finished 3-22 on the year, McHenry had her best season to date, averaging 11.1 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.1 assists per contest. She was also an Honorable Mention selection for the 2015-2016 All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference team.

Now she’s moving from the hardwood to the track.

So even with the 2015-2016 basketball season wrapped up, McHenry is still in season, preparing to compete as a member of the Grizzlies’ 2016 outdoor track and field team.

“I felt like I was in really good shape coming out of this basketball year, so I was like, ‘I can probably carry this straight into the outdoor season,’” McHenry said. “And I think I can contend well, but we’ll find out.”

McHenry qualified for the Class 2A Colorado State Track and Field Championships all four years of high school at Dolores, finishing fourth in the 4x200 meter relay and second in the 4x400 meter relay her freshman year.

But she stood out as a hurdler.

McHenry finished sixth in Class 2A in the 300-meter hurdles her sophomore year and fourth place her senior year.

She also placed ninth in the 100-meter hurdles her senior year, and she qualified for state in the 300-meter hurdles her junior year, but after suffering a broken ankle and with the state meet as her first competition back after the injury, she didn’t place.

Now, McHenry has her eyes set on running at the college level, and she’s focusing on the 400-meter hurdles.

Part of the decision to go out for the spring season came from her love of track and field. But she also sees competing in the outdoor track spring season as a way to stay in shape for basketball.

“Our track program contends nationally every year, so it’s a program that definitely works really hard and they hold a high standard to all their athletes,” McHenry said. “So I definitely think it will be something that keeps me in shape, and I’ll also try to get my basketball workouts in at the same time.”

McHenry started her track workouts this week, and as the indoor track season wraps up next weekend, she’ll prepare for competitions beginning in mid-March.
