On the first day of classes, Dolores Schools went into lockout mode for two hours Tuesday morning while a man with a handgun was being sought by deputies in a town neighborhood.

The lockout was lifted at 10:40 a.m. because deputies believed the man had left the area.

Montezuma County Sheriff Steven Nowlin said the suspect was involved in a domestic dispute in the Uptown Plaza trailer park. He grabbed a backpack with a gun in it and left on foot, triggering a search by deputies and the lockout. The man is described as 6 feet, 2 inches tall and was wearing a blue button-up shirt and black pants. He is wanted on two arrest warrants for traffic violations.

“He never came close to the campus,” Nowlin said.

During a lockout, no one is allowed to enter or leave the campus, and all outdoor activities are temporarily canceled, said Dolores Schools Superintendent Scott Cooper.

“We train for this kind of emergency, and everyone stayed calm and closely monitored the situation,” Cooper said.

The incident was not related to students or staff, officials said. Cooper said that parents were notified of the lockout — and that it has been lifted — by phone and email.

According to the school website, “The Dolores School District has received the all-clear from law enforcement to lift the lock out as of 10:40 a.m. on August 16. All schools are back to normal.”
