The Appleseed Collective plays the Dolores River Brewery at 8 p.m. Saturday.

The Appleseed Collective will pay a concert on Saturday, Aug. 20 at the Dolores River Brewery beginning at 8 p.m.

The progressive bluegrass band hails from Ann Arbor, Michigan and is known for a creative, New Orleans-inspired style.

“We’re riding the wave of the bluegrass revival beyond new grass and into a strange new genre-bending territory,” according to their website.

The Collective is a diverse bunch. Violin and mandolin player Brandon Worder-Smith grew up steeped in rural bluegrass and Irish fiddle culture. Guitarist Andrew Brown embraces a New Orleans Dixieland sound and is the son of a Motown session musician. Drummer Vince Russo not only plays the washboard, but has a penchant for ripping percussion solos. And bassist Eric O’Daly’s passion for Indian classical music blends well with is fiery Irish nature.

Says music critic Aarik Danielsen, of the Columbia Daily Tribune, “The Appleseed Collective sweeps out the various corners of American music, taking a long look at both the sublime and the strange. The group explores both dark and light in a way that other string band revivalists haven’t touched.”
