Students from Cortez Middle School’s 21st Century Learning program learned about ancient Pueblo life last week during a visit to Crow Canyon Archaeological Center. The group of nearly 40 students, along with sponsors Lisa Baer, Bobby Sitton, Chad Cunningham and Cory Madsen learned the basics of archaeology and ancient Pueblo culture from Crow Canyon educators and archaeologists as part of the center’s day program. The students, participated in a simulated archaeological dig as well as experience what life was like for the ancient people who lived in the Mesa Verde region over 1,000 years ago — including fire starting (with a bow drill), making fiber cordage, and “hunting” with spears and atlatls.
