Re-1 School District officials plan a parent and student reunification drill for third-, fourth- and fifth-graders at Kemper Elementary on Wednesday.

“Parent reunification drills can be very chaotic in a true emergency, and we want to conduct this drill in order to be as prepared as possible and to identify areas for improvement,” Kemper Principal Jamie Haukeness wrote in a letter to parents.

The students will be transported from Kemper to Montezuma-Cortez High School, 418 S. Sligo St. Parents should pick up their children at the M-CHS auxiliary gym between 1:30 and 2 p.m.

Parents are advised to bring identification, and they will be required to fill out a reunification form. Parents should park in the southwest parking lot of the high school. Kemper staff members and Cortez Fire Department personnel will guide parents to the auxiliary gym.

If parents have another student at Kemper who is in kindergarten, first or second grade, they should first pick that student up at Kemper at 1:30 p.m. and then go to M-CHS to pick up their other students.

Though schools conduct safety drills regularly, this will be the first time a reunification drill has been conducted.
