Withholding leads to overspending

Dear Editor:

What really caused our nation to be $14 trillion in the hole? Withholding money for taxes; that’s what caused it. A seemingly good thing has brought us to near bankruptcy. A

The tax is set up as an annual obligation, not monthly or quarterly withholding payments. Maybe it’s unconstitutional. We don’t know if we owe anything until April 15. That is accounting day. Only that day do we and the IRS know how much, if any, is owed. Until that day, the money is ours. A good horse trader could double that amount if he had it to use.

It feels so good to get a refund on April 15, or there’s no burden felt if a small sum has to be paid — so easy to pay, and so easy to take away and spend it. Washington knows that too.

Back when we wrote a big check on April 15, we felt burdened so we complained about taxes. We haven’t complained lately, and that’s why the boys in Washington overspent $14,000,000,000,000 — that’s $14 trillion.

Let’s get rid of unconstitutional withholding and do a lot of complaining in the future.
