The seventh annual Fraser Mountain Madness mountain bike race concluded over the weekend in New Mexicos Taos Ski Valley.
Jake and Nye Yackle represented Cortez well on Saturday in the boys 11-12 and 10U cross-country races. The boys raced 9.9 miles in the Category 3 course that was part of the New Mexico Off-Road Series and the Alison Dunlap Junior Olympic Mountain Bike Series. In Colorado, the Yackles race in the Mountain States Cup Series.
Jake Yackle, 10, won the 11-12 class and the Cat 3 course in a time of 1:11. The older second- and-third-place finishers were six to seven minutes behind Jake.
They each thought that they had won the Category. They couldnt believe a 10-year-old kid beat them, Donna Yackle said via email about the two kids disappointment in losing to her son, Jake.
Jake Yackle improved his time by about 14 minutes, compared to last year.
Nye Yackle, 8, placed eighth overall in the Cat 3 course at 1:29. He won the 10U age class and improved his time by about 13 minutes from 2010.
The Yackles will race again on Saturday, Aug. 13, in Dolores at the 13th annual Escalante Days Mountain Bike Race. Jake will race in the sport class and Nye will participate in the beginner class. They are the sons of Kevin and Donna Yackle.
