Cortez council to discuss smoking survey, recreation bids

The Cortez City Council on Tuesday night will discuss topics such as smoke-free zones and park construction bids.

The regular meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the new city hall on 123 Roger Smith Ave., but the council also has scheduled a workshop to begin at 5:30 p.m. During the workshop, they’ll discuss the results of the survey put out by the Parks and Recreation Department on potential smoke-free zones around city property. The regular meeting’s agenda includes a public hearing on the final reading of two ordinances the council reviewed on March 14, as well as consideration of several construction and maintenance bids for the city’s parks.

Dean Palmquist, the Parks and Recreation director, will make several different presentations at the meeting. During the workshop, he’ll not only present the survey results, but also participate in a discussion about the possible hiring of a new fitness specialist at the Cortez Recreation Center and a Recreation Center sales tax reissue. In the regular meeting, he’ll recommend a bid for the new Centennial Park restrooms, which the city plans to build this summer, as well as a bid for new infield mix at the Rotary Park and South Softball Complex.
