Police and sheriff's vehicles block County Road G on Saturday afternoon after a vehicle pursuit involving two suspects in a Shiprock stabbing.

Cortez police and Montezuma County sheriff’s deputies helped Navajo police catch two suspects from Shiprock in Cortez on Saturday afternoon.

According to Montezuma County Sheriff Steve Nowlin, the suspects were wanted by police in connection with a stabbing in New Mexico the night before. Navajo police were in pursuit of their vehicle when they crossed the border into Colorado early Saturday afternoon, and Montezuma law enforcement caught up to them in the 24000 block of County Road G just after 2 p.m. The suspects were transported back to Shiprock in Navajo police custody.

As of Saturday afternoon, Nowlin could not give out many details about the case, including the suspects’ names. But he did say there was a chase along Road G involving police, deputies and the suspects, and that the suspects were caught after a sheriff’s deputy deployed stop sticks on the road in front of them.

“They stopped just short of the stop sticks and gave up,” he said.

No injuries were reported in the pursuit.

The Shiprock Police Department would not comment on the case Saturday.
