Hunters Education Course



There will be a two-day Hunters Education course at the Montezuma County Fairgrounds on the weekend of Aug. 20-21. The course runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The minimum age to sign up is 10 and there is a $10 entry fee. No preregistration is required. Anyone born on or after Jan. 1, 1949, must complete a Hunters Education course to be able to hunt or trap in the state of Colorado. For more information, please contact Steve Nellin at 882-7627.




Summer Bash Softball Tournament



The Ute Mountain Recreation Softball Fields in Towaoc will host the 2011 Summer Bash softball tournament on the weekend of Aug. 27-28. There will be men’s and Coed teams. People must supply their own softballs. Entry fee is $125. The deadline to register is Friday, Aug. 26, at noon. Register at the Ute Mountain Rec. Center. Medicine Horse Golf Tournament



South Forty Golf Course, located at 25500 Road H, is hosting the third annual Medicine Horse ‘Masters’ Golf Tournament on Saturday, Aug. 27. Registration is at 8 a.m. Scramble format/shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Cost to participate is $25 per player ($100 per four-person team). There will also be driving range, closest to the pin and longest putt challenges, and more! Entry fee includes nine holes of golf, course drinks, lunch, and a whole lot of fun! All event proceeds go to Medicine Horse equine assisted therapy programs.

M-CHS Fall Sports Kickoff 2011



Montezuma-Cortez High School is kicking off its fall sports season on Saturday, Aug. 27, with the Drive One 4 Ur School fundraiser. It will run from noon to 6 p.m. at Panther Stadium. There will be games and free food, and people can test drive a new Ford vehicle. Ford will donate $20 to M-CHS athletics for every test drive. The event is sponsored by Keesee (Ford) Motor Co. and the M-CHS Booster Club. For more information, please contact Debra Ramsey at 565-3992.




Cortez Special Olympics Bowling



The Cortez Special Olympics will start its bowling season on Saturday, Aug. 27, with practice at Lakeside Lanes. Practices will lead to the regional tournament on Saturday, Oct 1. The state tourney will be in Denver. For information about signing up or volunteering, please contact Cortez Special Olympics coach Marci Aldaz at 560-9577.




Cortez Bowling Association Leagues



Bowling leagues for the fall/winter season are just about here in Cortez! Ladies, need something to do while kids are in school? There are Wednesday morning and Tuesday afternoon leagues with singles and team openings! Team openings are also available for Monday night (ladies) as well as men’s leagues during the week. Youth leagues begin late fall. Bowling is fun for everyone and a great social event, and provides a healthy alternative activity for the entire family to enjoy. For information on league times and who to contact for sign ups and start dates, call Lakeside Lanes at 565-9355. Starting on Monday, Aug. 29, from 6:15 to 9 p.m., is the first ladies league. There is no deadline to start. Leagues take bowlers all year long.




Cortez Recreation Men’s, Women’s Volleyball, Coed Flag Football



The city of Cortez is now taking reservations for regular season men’s and women’s volleyball. Teams will consist of at least six players. The season begins on Monday, Sept. 12. Each team will receive eight games and a double elimination tournament. The cost is $175 per team. Come by the Cortez Recreation Center to register. Registrations close Thursday, Sept. 1.

The Cortez Rec. Center is also taking registrations for Coed flag football. Teams will consist of a minimum of six players, three men and three women.

Each team will receive a six game season and a single elimination tournament. The cost to play is $175. The season begins Sept. 12. The registration deadline is Sept. 1. Come by the Cortez Rec. Center to register.




M-CHS Booster Club Meeting



The next meeting for the Montezuma-Cortez High School Booster Club will be held on Monday, Sept. 12, at 6 p.m in the M-CHS Library. All meetings for this school year will be held the first Monday of the month that is not a holiday. Our athletes need our support, please join us! Tri-City Soccer Sign Ups



Tri-city soccer still has space available for children to sign up. U4 has 12 spots, U6 has 11 spots, U8 has eight spots, U10 girls has five spots, U10 boys has five spots and U12 boys has four spots. Four Corners Rifle and Pistol Club Members Only Open Handgun Shoot



The Four Corners Rifle and Pistol Club will hold a members only open handgun shoot at the indoor range on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 7 to 9 p.m., and on the third Saturday of each month from 6 to 10 p.m. Cost will be $2 per person for six targets.
