Well! The monsoon rains did not arrive over the weekend as we had hoped might happen. Therefore, we are enjoying crisp blue skies in the morning and partly cloudy skies in the afternoons just like our friends downvalley. We cannot deny that there is a certain feeling in the air that one feels as the autumn days are fast approaching. Weather for hiking and camping is at its best right now. And the fishing! Our neighbor Gary Reid is a first-class catch-and-release fly fisherman, and a couple of days ago enjoyed hooking up with a 19.5-inch German brown on the river up above town “somewhere.” What a thrill that must have been! We hear that fishing has been real good since the water has subsided.

Gary Hart of Rico and Dallas is in town on vacation. Just he and his dog Rico, this time. Wife Debra had to do a couple of reunions back in Minnesota and missed the Rico trip this year. The first day, after arriving here, Gary made his annual mission trip to the top of Mount Expectation in honor of his deceased sister Marcia, who dearly loved this country. Gary’s stepfather was Wayne Webster of the former Rico Development Corp.

The Rico Mason’s of A.M.-F.M. No. 79 met at their regular monthly meeting at the lodge on the 9th. Those members attending were Richard Lincoln, Mark Martin, Glen Baer, Peter DuMont, Ken Hazen, Mickey Blower and Jerry Brooks. Most of the discussion centered on finding a commercial business that might be interested in renting the entire first floor of the Masonic Lodge building. The first floor was totally remodelled a few years back and is in excellent condition, located on our main street across from the post office. (Please call 967-2162 for more information).

Our latest restaurant, Dew South, has added a morning menu and is serving breakfast daily. We are enjoying this latest addition to our fair town!

It looks like Rico Town Park will be sporting a half-pipe. I believe that our Rico Center Foundation made this dream possible. Our young people deserve this addition. I mean, after all, our youth cannot fish every day and not get bored. We needed this idea ages ago.

Marlene Hazen has lived in Rico for two decades. An active member of the community, she participates in organizations such as the Rico Women’s Club and Rico Historical Society.
