Library’s September Storytime theme is ‘I Love to Read!’



“I Love to Read!” is the September theme of Storytime at the Cortez Public Library, located at 202 N. Park Street. Storytime is held every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. for preschool-aged children and every Saturday at the Farmers Market beginning at 10:30 a.m., weather permitting. The Farmers Market is located on the corner of S. Elm and Main streets. Older children are welcome to join for the craft at 11:15 a.m. Thursdays. The Saturday Storytime will follow the same theme as the preceding Thursday.

On Thursday, Sept. 1 and Saturday, Sept. 3, Storytime will introduce “Who Writes the Berenstein Bears?” “Clifford Who?” will be the focal point for Thursday, Sept. 8 and Saturday, Sept. 10. Next is “Curious George’s Literary Parents” on Sept. 15 and Sept. 17. We’ll explore another author on Sept. 22 and Sept. 24 with “Beatrix Potter’s Animal Friends.” Storytime will wrap up the month with “I Can Write & Draw at the Same Time!: Jack Ezra Keats” on Sept. 29 and Oct. 1.

Storytime offers songs, stories, crafts and silliness and uses the Early Childhood Literacy Initiative program.

Library will offer class on Google searches, maps, images



The Cortez Public Library will hold a computer class on Using Google at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, at 202 N. Park.

Subjects covered will include Simple Searching Tips and Techniques, Google Maps and Google Images.

NEPA coordinator for San Juan National Forest will speak



The Mesa Verde Back Country Horsemen will present educational speaker Deborah Kill, National Environmental Policy Act coordinator for the San Juan National Forest, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, at the Elks Lodge, 2100 North Dolores Road on Colorado Highway 145, Cortez.

Kill will speak about NEPA and its implementation in proposing and evaluating the environmental effects of forest service projects. Virtually any forest service action requires some kind of NEPA analysis. The schedule of proposed actions (located on the San Juan website) is a good place to see all of the kinds of NEPA planning efforts underway on Dolores Public Lands. This event is open to the public.

Come early at 6:15 p.m. for a buy-your-own Taco Tuesday meal before the meeting.

CSU Extension will offer info on food safety; test canner gauges



Colorado State University Extension master food safety advisors and master gardeners will answer questions, test pressure canner gauges, supply handouts and have a display of suggested supplies on display from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6, in the Calvin Denton Room of Empire Electric Association, 801 N. Broadway in Cortez.

The public is invited to bring questions about food safety, food preservation, or gardening in this area.

Archaeologist will discuss Basketmakers with Hisatsinom



The Hisatsinom Chapter of the Colorado Archaeological Society will present Shanna Diederichs, supervisory archaeologist for Crow Canyon’s Basketmaker Communities Project, to discuss the new Indian Camp Ranch excavation in a talk entitled On Solid Ground: Unpacking the Research of the Basketmaker Community Project at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, at the Cortez Cultural Center, 25 N. Market St.

Diederichs will discuss how, in designing a research plan for the Dillard Basketmaker III site near Cortez, excavation is only one of five very important steps, from research design to curation, which will be executed. The Basketmaker III period is considered to be definitive in the development of Puebloan culture.

Diederichs joined the Crow Canyon staff fairly recently. Previously, she served as project director at several sites including Mesa Verde. Prior to that, she served as field and laboratory supervisor for numerous cultural resource management and mitigation projects in the Four Corners area. She has written for and contributed to numerous resources management planning and reporting publications, including, recently, “Crucible of the Pueblos: The Early Pueblo Period in the Northern Southwest.”

Little People story time will



focus on changing of the seasons

The Mancos Public Library will start Little People story time at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 211 W. First St.

Children ages 2 through 6 will be taught songs, verses and stories, with the changing of the seasons emphasized. A craft is also offered. The program is free.

Family Leadership Training Institute will hold open house



Family Leadership Training Institute will hold a community open house from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, at the Cortez Library, 202 N. Park St.

The open house will offer a taste of FLTI, including a sampler session, the opportunity to learn more about the program, and a chance to network with local alumni and the Montelores FLTI leadership team. Applications will be available on site. FLTI is accepting applications, and the third round of this training will start in October.

Galloping Goose Historical Society to hold annual meeting and picnic



The Galloping Goose Historical Society of Dolores will hold its annual meeting and picnic lunch at noon Saturday, Sept. 10, in Flanders Park behind the society’s museum in Dolores. The annual meeting will follow at about 1 p.m.

The meeting and picnic are open to current and past members of the society and to anyone interested in learning more about the organization. The annual meeting agenda includes recognition of volunteers, annual reports, election of president and vice president for one year, and election of three positions on the board of directors for three years each.

Montelores Catholic Community will hold rummage/yard sale



The Montelores Catholic Community will hold a Rummage/Yard Sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Sept. 9 and 10, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, on the corner of Montezuma and Market Streets, in Cortez.

A large array of items will be offered. Donations of items to sell will be accepted at the church hall from Monday, Aug. 29, until noon Thursday, Sept. 8; no large appliances, please.

Cortez library will host ongoing computer job-search classes



Gabe Torres from the Southwest Colorado Workforce Center will teach job-search computer classes every other week at the library on an ongoing basis. Classes are at 1 p.m. on alternating Fridays, with the next class on Sept. 9.

Torres will focus on various aspects of finding a job on the Internet, including registering with the Workforce Center, updating your Workforce registration, conducting job searches statewide, updating skills which will allow the system to find more jobs for the client, applying for unemployment insurance, ONET-ON-Line website job title searches, resume preparation, searching for state applications, labor market information, labor law information and facilitating the WorkKeys Skills Assessment.

People interested in learning more about finding a job online can sign up for the classes by calling the library at 565-8117. Classes will be limited to 10 people.




Spinning Wheels will perform funky Americana



The Spinning Wheels will perform their brand of funky Americana at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at the Mancos Valley Distillery, 116 N. Main St. in Mancos.

Show will feature variety of artists from Aspen Guard Station program



The public is invited to attend the artists reception for the annual Aspen Guard Station Art Show from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at the Cortez Cultural Center, 25 N. Market St.

Participants will be able to meet the artists from last year’s artist-in-residence program and view the artwork inspired by their stays at the historic Aspen Guard Station. Refreshments will be served.

Featured artists include Lisa Mueller of Cortez, acrylics; Amy Vaclav-Felker of Durango, Day of the Dead shadow boxes; Chandler Wigton of Durango, mixed media; Kathy Steckel of Crawford, pastel and glass; and Irene Wanner of Jemez Springs, N.M., writing.

The show will be on display through the month of September.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s will kick off day of events



The Ute Mountain Casino Walk to End Alzheimer’s will be held Saturday, Sept. 10, beginning with registration at 9 a.m., with the walk beginning at 10 a.m. at the Cortez City Park.

There will be live entertainment consisting of the Durango Performing Arts dance group, Donnie and Dawnie Johnson, Slim McWilliams, Pastor Anthony Maez and Linda Carter. Monies earned at this event support the Southwest Colorado Alzheimer’s Association. If you don’t wish to walk, just come for a day of enjoyment at the park. There will be refreshments served.

Harvest Beer Festival will feature regional ales and live music



The Montezuma Land Conservancy will host the 13th Annual Harvest Beer Festival from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at Parque de Vida Pavilion, in Cortez.

Admission is $25, and includes unlimited beer tasting ($15 for nondrinkers), souvenir glass and all event activities. Children under age 15 are free with paid adult. The festival will feature hand-crafted ales from 10 regional breweries, rum from Mancos Valley Distillery, and Zuberfizz handmade sodas; live music opening with Sound Advice and Jack Ten High as the headliner; a Super Silent Auction featuring weekend getaways, outdoor gear, photography, fine art, massages, jewelry, and more; delicious local food (sold separately); and kid’s activities by National Art Honor Society from Montezuma-Cortez High School.

The Annual Harvest Beer Festival supports Montezuma Land Conservancy’s mission to conserve important farm and ranch lands, wildlife habitat, and scenic open space in partnership with willing landowners.

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church will hold yard sale



St. Paul’s Episcopal Church’s yard sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Montezuma Trading Co., at U.S. Highway 160 and Willow Street in Mancos. Donations of clean, gently-used items will be accepted from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9.

Local members of MCHS Class



of 1948 will hold reunion

Local members of the Class of 1948 will host their 63rd reunion beginning Friday, Sept. 16, with registration and an open house for friends from noon to 5 p.m. at the Calvin Denton Room, Empire Electric Association, 801 N. Broadway, Cortez.

Saturday, Sept. 17, activities will offer various local attractions for groups or individuals; on Saturday evening, there will be a dinner at the Cortez Elks Lodge for class members, and on Sunday morning, Sept. 18, a casual breakfast/brunch will be held at a local restaurant.

As of this date, approximately 24 of the surviving 32 class members are registered to attend the reunion.




Spring Creek Basin mustangs will be available for adoption



The National Mustang Association will sponsor trainer Ems Rapp to demonstrate her wild horse taming and training techniques from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, at the Montezuma County Fairgrounds, 30100 U.S. Highway 160 east of Cortez. Rapp will ride her Spring Creek Basin mustang, Rock-On, adopted after the 2007 roundup. Rock-On will serve as a Spring Creek Basin mustang ambassador for everyone to meet.

Roughly 25 wild horses from the Spring Creek Basin herd in Disappointment Valley will be available for adoption at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24, at the fairgrounds. The adoption will follow a planned gather by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management around Sept. 15.

Expect to see blacks, grays, colorful pintos and duns. The horses will be 4 years old and younger. Over the years, many Spring Creek Basin horses have been adopted, tamed, trained and become treasured riding horses.

Individuals interested in adopting a horse must meet corral and shelter requirements. The standards are available at http://www.blm.gov/adoptahorse/requirements.php. Horses not adopted will be placed in long-term pastures.
