KITTENS, KITTENS, AND MORE KITTENS! This little tri-color calico and lots of other baby girls and guys need a new address in happy, suitable homes. The shelter has many kittens up for adoption in a variety of age groups and colors. There are gray tiger tabbies, white kittens with orange markings, peanut butter cup calicos, and orange tabbies. There are also some adult cats, including a long-haired Himalayan with blue crossed-eyes; some of these adults could be excellent barn cats. The adoption fee for felines is $30, which covers spaying or neutering, first vaccination shot, and a free health exam at the local vet. The shelter is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is closed every other Friday for intensive cleaning — this week the shelter will be closed on Friday, and on Monday, Sept. 5 for the Labor Day holiday. On Saturday, Sept. 17, the shelter will host a special fundraising and adopt-a-thon event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a dog wash, two organized dog walks, and contests with prizes. Keep your eye on the Community Calendar section of the Cortez Journal for more information as it becomes available. Right now, the shelter desperately needs Iams or Purina kitten food. They also need Pedigree or Purina dog food, Purina puppy chow, human baby shampoo for washing dogs and puppies, and cleaning supplies such as bleach, Pine-Sol, and paper towels. As always, the shelter appreciates all the donations that the community brings in; every little bit helps. For more information, call the shelter at 565-4910.
