May 1 is the next deadline for ordering stones to be placed in front of the Cortez Recreation Center.

Friends of Recreation for a Healthy Community is selling the stones for the Stones for Scholarships project.

Proceeds from the sale of the stones will be used for the scholarship endowment fund at Onward! A Legacy Foundation, which is the local community foundation.

Stones can be inscribed with an individual name, family name, business name, name of an organization, in honor of someone or in memory of someone who has died. Stones are available in three sizes. A 4- by 12-inch stone is $100, an 8- by 12-inch stone is $250 and a 12- by 12-inch stone is $500.

Friends of Recreation for a Healthy Community is a private, nonprofit group established primarily to provide scholarships for those who would otherwise not be able to participate in activities at the Recreation Center. The group does annual fundraising activities to fund each year’s scholarships. Since the center opened in 2004, Friends of Recreation has provided 380 scholarships to individuals of all ages throughout Montezuma County. It has also awarded 13 grants to agencies, enabling them to provide Recreation Center experiences for their clients.

Stone order forms are available in the entrance hall at the Recreation Center or by contacting Jack Schuenemeyer at jackswsc@q.com.
