Snow showers forecast for San Juan Mountains

Moderate to heavy snowfall is expected Monday night and Tuesday in the San Juan Mountains of Southwest Colorado, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather service predicted an 80 percent chance of snow in mountain towns including Rico, Telluride, Hesperus, Silverton and Ouray late Monday night. A winter weather advisory is in effect from midnight Monday to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

The heaviest snow is expected to fall early Tuesday morning, with accumulations of 4 to 6 inches above 9,000 feet elevation, and 1 to 4 inches below 9,000 feet.

In Cortez, there’s a 60 percent chance of precipitation on Tuesday. Scattered showers are forecast for Cortez on Monday night, followed by rain or snow showers through Tuesday night. The high temperature on Tuesday is expected to reach 51 degrees, with an overnight low near 30 degrees.

There’s a 30 percent chance of rain in Cortez Wednesday through Friday.
