Tax increases are never temporary

Dear Editor:

Our thanks to William Taylor of Dolores for his Oct. 18 letter regarding Proposition 103. He is absolutely correct that no tax increase has ever been temporary, even when the sponsors of the measure say it will be. At my advanced age, I cannot remember of any tax increase put in effect and then discontinued at a later date. There are a some taxes initiated during World War II that were to last only for the duration of the war. Those taxes are still in effect.

Proposition 103, for improving education in the state, if passed, will never be discontinued. Once the education system uses this funding for five years as stated, they will not give up the extra money and will plead poverty, and insist the kids will suffer if they have to cut the schools budgets.

I believe it is very wrong to ask for any tax increases at this time when our country is in the deep recession.
