Tuesday, May 9

5:24 p.m.: A woman reported a theft in the 16000 block of U.S. Highway 145. She said someone had stolen about $350 of flagstones she and her husband had planned to use for landscaping on their property. The case remains under investigation.

8:26 p.m.: A man was arrested in the 16000 block of U.S. Highway 145 on suspicion of DUI, obstructing a highway, obstructing a law enforcement officer and an open container violation after he was pulled over for stopping in the middle of the highway. The man reportedly got out of the vehicle as soon as he was pulled over and began yelling and approaching the responding deputy’s vehicle with his fists clenched. The deputy pointed his gun at him and warned him to go back to his vehicle, but although the man backed up a bit, he reportedly stayed in a fighting stance and kept moving into the road, obstructing traffic. After warning him again, the deputy put away his firearm and deployed his stun gun twice, the first time being ineffective. The man went to the ground the second time, but reportedly still refused to put his hands behind his back to be handcuffed, leading the deputy to deploy the stun gun again. The man was medically cleared at Southwest Memorial Hospital before being taken to jail.

Thursday, May 11

9:03 a.m.: A woman reported a vehicle break-in in the 28000 block of U.S. Highway 160. She claimed someone had rummaged through her car after she forgot to lock it the night before, leaving the interior in disarray. Since nothing appeared to have been stolen, she said she did not want to pursue charges, but just wanted to “let (law enforcement) know this is going on.”

11:27 p.m.: Deputies responded to a report of a woman who was being treated for a gunshot wound at Southwest Memorial Hospital, 1311 N. Mildred Road. The woman claimed she was getting ready to clean a rifle at home when her dog jumped on the bed where it was lying and caused it to fire a round that was in the chamber, hitting her. Hospital staff said her injury was consistent with the story, and the responding deputy found no evidence warranting further investigation.

Deputies listed the checks as lost and closed the investigation.

Park St. A man had reported the truck was stolen, along with a tool box that was inside it, from the 12000 block of County Road 21. Cortez police had found the vehicle in the possession of a man who said he traded it for a motorcycle from two men, one of whom was using the name of the truck’s owner.
