St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church

Since Ash Wednesday 40 days ago, there have not been any flowers or greenery decorating the local Catholic Churches. Instead, a large wooden cross stands outside of St. Margaret Mary Church draped in purple, blowing in the wind. This changes on Palm Sunday to a vivid red drape with the parishioners gathering at the park across from the church for a procession with waving palms.

On Wednesday morning, April 20, the hall will be festooned with flowers. Visitors are welcome from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament at the Altar of Repose. Thursday’s celebration of the Last Supper will be a bilingual service at 7 p.m. April 21. At the end, everyone again processes out of the church, down the street to the Altar of Repose, and the church is completely stripped.

Father Pat Valdez will lead the Stations of the Cross at 3 p.m. Good Friday afternoon, April 22. At the 7 p.m. bilingual service Father Pat will carry the wooden cross draped in three red cloths down the middle aisle of the church for veneration.

Holy Saturday morning, April 23, at 10 a.m. begins with the old country tradition of blessing the Easter food of ham, bread and eggs with incense. The Easter Vigil begins at 8 p.m. outside with the new fire and the lighting of the Paschal Candle. The Baptismal font will be filled with fresh water for Easter. Parishioners are invited to bring containers to take some Easter Water home. There will be several Baptisms. Triumphantly, the choir will ring in Easter with bells.

The Easter morning Mass starts at the usual time of 10:30 April 24. All are welcome to attend this celebration of Christ’s resurrection.
