An inch of snow changes everything in Rico

We have enjoyed wonderful days of nothing but sunshine, cold mornings, a few dripping eaves from calm and warm afternoons — until last Monday when one little inch of snow came tumbling down from the sky and made our wonderful Christmas scene nice and white again. It doesn’t take much to change some things in our world, does it. One little inch.

Our yards and streets are covered for the duration of this season, and now what we need are some snowbanks to keep our travelers and commuters on the road. One of our young residents lost it down on the highway bridge near the Wildcat Canyon area. She hit the guardrail twice on the bridge and ended up at breakneck speed backwards down the steep embankment, into the willows. If it had been the right side of the road, the river would have been a dangerous factor. Speed was not involved, just adverse conditions like an icy bridge, which we are warned about! I guess this is a quiet warning to make us remember the dangers of driving in winter before we all head for grandma’s house for Christmas.

The Rico Volunteer Fire Department/Search and Rescue hosted their annual Christmas Party, potluck and silent auction last Saturday. It is always well attended by the community, and a time of relaxation and visiting, which a busy community like ours responds to. Santa finally was able to land and join the festivities. It looked like he had invested in a new suit, so he was quite dashing.

We appreciate the fire department’s efforts to host this event each year, setting up for the potluck and Santa — if he can make it — and giving the building a good going over with elbow grease!

The town is working on the new skating rink behind the school. The children are already testing it out even before it is finished. What a great idea! Wondering where the kids are? Check the skating rink down at the school!

I leave you with a sincere greeting of Merry Christmas. May this day be extra-special for you and yours, and we wish all of you a happy and safe weekend if you are traveling. Family and good friends are a blessing for all of us.
