Montezuma-Cortez High School girls swimming picked up its first win of the season.
The Lady Panthers split a tri-meet at Durango High School last Friday. M-CHS opened the new year 1-1, earning a 79-65 dual victory over Aspen.
Host Durango went 2-0, knocking off both Montezuma-Cotez and Aspen.
Aspen is similar to us. We both have small (roster) teams, M-CHS coach Ann Hight said. Its difficult when you go up against a team that outnumbers you 3-1; like Durango. It was nice to compete against a team our size.
There was no diving competition, which really boded well for the Lady Panthers (M-CHS does not field a diving team). It was just straight up swimming.
It (the meet) was more indicative of the quality of our team. Were really happy with the outcome of it, Hight said. The girls who were able to train during the (holiday) break, it showed in their times. We had some individual performances that were quite good.
Emily Harris had a strong performance. The Dolores junior had the fourth best overall time in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:05.01. Harris also placed fifth in the 200 Individual Medley relay at 2:48.38.
Madison VanBibber, a freshman, finished fifth in the 50-free in 29.82.
Finishing the 50-free under 30 seconds, is a milestone for her, Hight said.
The M-CHS 200-relay team of Harris, Elana Cope, Meggis Curtis and VanBibber placed fourth.
Hight says she is still ironing out which events some girls will participate in, while preparing for a busy week.
M-CHS will swim Friday and Saturday in Montrose and Glenwood Springs at 4 p.m. and 10 a.m.
