A popular and scenic section of trail at Phil’s World has reopened to the public thanks to the generosity of a local landowner.

Where the Stinking Springs trail traverses the top of a rocky cliff with expanding views was closed last year after the Bureau of Land Management was notified it crosses private property. The trail was rerouted to stay within BLM boundaries.

But last week, Montezuma County secured a free annual lease for the section of trail from the landowner to allow continued recreational use by the public. The closed trail signs have been removed. Trail users must stay on the trail where it crosses private land.

“We are very grateful to the landowner for working with us,” said commissioner Larry Don Suckla.
