A 60-year-old male was found dead on Sunday from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound on a trail near Haviland Lake, according to the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigator Peter Berryhill did not immediately release the identify of the man, who is believed to be local, as next of kin needs to be notified.

Berryhill said hikers reported the incident around 10 a.m. on a trail between Haviland and Electra lakes.

He said it didn’t appear the man was camping in the area. A pistol was found nearby.

“It looked like he was out there alone,” Berryhill said.

If confirmed, this would be the 11th reported suicide this year in La Plata County.
