One year after winning the state tournament and qualifying for the Regional Little League Tournament in Texas, the Southwest Colorado Little League (Cortez) senior team will look to defend its title on its home field.

This year’s senior’s tournament, which will feature teams from Cortez, Arapahoe, Orchard Mesa and Sherrelwood, begins at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 12. The tournament will feature 15- and 16-year-old players.

Cortez will open the tournament at McAndrew Field against Arapaho at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Before the opening game, longtime Little League coach and Dolores resident “Papa” Jack Squires will be honored and will throw out a ceremonial first pitch.

The state championship game will be played at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 15. A second championship game will be played at 2 p.m. Saturday if such a game becomes necessary.
