Mancos State Park plans eclipse party, music

In 1979, eclipse enthusiasts gathered at Observatory Hill in Goldendale, Washington, to watch a solar eclipse. The first place to experience total darkness during this year’s solar eclipse will be in Oregon.

Mancos State Park will host an eclipse party on Aug. 21, complete with 100 pairs of eyeglasses for safely viewing the celestial event, the park announced on Monday.

The total solar eclipse affects much of the northern half of the United States, although the eclipse in Southwest Colorado will not be total. Eclipse watchers will meet at the Group Picnic Area starting at 10 a.m. The eclipse starts about 10:15 a.m. with the darkest part of the eclipse, known as Mid eclipse, about 11:38 a.m. The eclipse ends about 1:05 p.m.

Light refreshments will be served.

Mancos State Park also on Monday announced that its newest entertainer, local musician Tim Krebs, who will perform at Saturday, Aug. 19, at 7 p.m. Krebs says he is “a singer-songwriter, Cowboy from my youth. I sing old cowboy songs, gospel songs, and much more.”

Krebs is dedicated to his faith and notes that, “I sing for the Lord always, wherever He leads.”

His appearance is part of the park’s Music in the Park summer series.

Folk musician Donna Joerg will reprise her eclectic mix of music on Saturday, Aug. 12, at 7 p.m.

Joerg is as a “professional busker” who plays in public places for tips. She is also a modern troubadour who mixes modern folk and music honoring indigenous peoples.

Mancos State Park, on County Road N at County Road 42, is open to boating, fishing, hiking and camping.

All events are free with $7 per vehicle park admission. Carpooling is encouraged.
