The Republican caucuses Tuesday night dominated the political news last week.

But the race for La Plata’s 59th District seat in the state House of Representatives got more interesting.

Durango lawyer Mike McLachlan entered the race Thursday against incumbent Rep. J. Paul Brown, R-Ignacio.

“I’m tired of seeing government gridlocked by partisanship and extremism. That’s why our mountain communities deserve new representation,” McLachlan said.

The field of candidates is not yet set. Democrat Patrick Swonger of Silverton also has declared his intent to run, but the state Democratic Party ruled him ineligible because he registered as a Democrat a day after the deadline.

The 59th District, which currently includes the Mancos area, has been redrawn starting in 2013.

James McMillan, an unaffiliated candidate from Durango, also has filed papers to enter the race.

Countdown: 269 days until the November election.
