Following is a list of upcoming events for the Anasazi Heritage Center and Canyons of the Ancients National Monument through October 2017. Please note the change to the “Behind the Scenes Curation Tours” ending date – now Aug. 10 – and an added eclipse program on Aug. 21. Saturday, Aug. 5
9 a.m.: Anasazi Heritage Center Garden Tour
Want to learn ways to help your ornamental garden thrive in our high desert environment? Join our volunteer gardeners for a stroll around the BLM-Anasazi Heritage Center’s flower beds and learn about our prize-winning gardens.
Thursdays through Aug. 10
2 p.m.: Behind the Scenes Curation Tours
Available to visitors age 10 and up. Reservations are encouraged, at 970-882-5600. Included with admission to the Anasazi Heritage Center, which is $3 per person age 18 and up, and free with the America the Beautiful Public Lands Pass. Arrive at least 10 minutes before the tour begins.
Monday, Aug. 21
10 a.m.: Eclipse Extravaganza
Learn about solar astronomy, sun safety and the cultural connections to our closest star while witnessing the partial eclipse with safety equipment and live feeds from the path of totality. Participants will receive a Junior Observer certificate. Free program in front of museum building.
Thursdays through Oct. 26
10.30 a.m.: The Big Picture Tour
Encompasses the high points of the Anasazi Heritage Center’s Main Gallery, in 30-45 minutes. Included with admission to the Anasazi Heritage Center, which is $3 per person age 18 and up, and free with the America the Beautiful Public Lands Pass.
3 p.m.: Main Exhibit Gallery Tour
This main gallery tour and discusses trade, hunting, and cultures prior to the Ancestral Puebloans, in 30-45 minutes. Included with admission to the Anasazi Heritage Center, which is $3 per person age 18 and up, and free with the America the Beautiful Public Lands Pass.
Saturdays through Sept. 2
11 a.m.: Totems, Towers, and Other A-Maze-Ing Coincidences
Explore the similarities between European and Southwestern cultures 1,000-2,000 years ago. Included with admission to the Anasazi Heritage Center, which is $3 per person age 18 and up, and free with the America the Beautiful Public Lands Pass.
Saturday, July 29
8:30 p.m.: Four Corners Lecture Series “Of Coyotes & Moon Landings”
Apollo 17 astronaut, moonwalker and former U.S. Sen. Harrison Schmitt of New Mexico, hosts presentation in the theater. Free.
Sunday, Aug. 20
8 p.m.: Night with the Ancients Astronomy Program
A park ranger helps you explore cultural stories told with the night sky. Meet in front of the museum to walk to location. Plan to dress in layers and bring a blanket and flashlight – preferably a red light. Free.
