Escalante Days begin Friday

Escalante Days and Nights is Friday and Saturday in Dolores. The theme this year is “Where the Wild Still Lives.”

The Children’s bike parade begins at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Dolores General Store, 300 Central Ave. There will also be awards for kids, a bike rodeo and safety obstacle course and an ice-cream eating contest. After the parade, there will be a drawing for bikes.The traditional pancake breakfast, a fundraiser for the K-9 Search and Rescue Team, starts at 6 a.m. Saturday at the Dolores Doghouse, next door to the fire station. The softball tournament begins at 7 a.m. Call Grant Hobbs for details at 970-560-8709.The parade begins at 10 a.m. at the Dolores High School parking lot. The theme is outdoor adventure, and the parade will be led by Dan Heeney, the 2017 Citizen of the Year.The Rotary Club of Dolores is sponsoring the mountain bike races. There are beginner, sport, expert and endurance categories and a 5K fun run. Races start early. Go to Doloresrace.com for details and to sign up.A packed Saturday Saturday is packed with entertainment all day in town, then there is a 10-band music festival with two stages at the Dolores River Brewery for just $10.

Don’t miss the chain saw competition at 11 a.m., watermelon-eating contest at noon, balloon toss at 12:30 p.m., and arm-wrestling contest at 1 p.m. Also scheduled are the Penny Hunt at 2 p.m., Hula Hoop Contest at 2:30 p.m., three-legged race at 3 p.m., egg toss at 3:30 p.m., and water fight on Central Avenue by Dolores Volunteer Fire and Rescue.Free Galloping Goose rides will be offered all day, starting at 11 a.m.Who’s playingThe performers for the music festival at the Dolores Brewery are all local favorites.

The schedule is Aloha Club at 2 p.m., Stan McNeil at 3:15 p.m., The Moetones at 3:45 p.m., Donny Johnson at 5 p.m., Last Nickel at 5:30 p.m., Troupe Verde Belly Dance at 6:45 p.m., The Cannondolls at 7:15 p.m., Donny Johnson at 8:30 p.m., The Crags at 9 p.m., Bradley Sitton at 10:15 p.m. and Wake Up Laughing at 10:45 p.m. Special guest Jill Carlson will emcee the festival. “Escalante Days and Nights is a locals favorite, and the evening music festival keeps people in town the whole weekend,” said Rocky Moss, of the Dolores Chamber of Commerce. “We have all the classic events again. The softball game, bike race, fun run, and parade focusing on boats and the outdoors highlights of our backyard playground.”
