Police were searching Tuesday for a man suspected of stabbing two people early Monday at a homeless camp west of Durango city limits.

Hernando Tsosie, 39, is suspected of stabbing the men shortly after 3 a.m. Monday at the homeless camp above Tech Center Drive, said Dan Bender, spokesman with the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office.

Both victims were taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center where they received stitches and were released, Bender said. One man was stabbed in the leg; Bender was not immediately aware of where the other man was stabbed.

The victims were identified as Harold Thompson, 31, of New Mexico, and Skyler Maryboy, 29, of Arizona.

Deputies were seeking a warrant for Tsosie, who is suspected of felony assault with a deadly weapon. Tsosie also is suspected of being involved in a domestic violence situation earlier that night, Bender said.

“The two stabbing victims may have intervened on behalf of the woman earlier that night,” Bender said Tuesday.

Tsosie pleaded guilty last month to invasion of privacy for sexual gratification, a felony, for peeping into a women’s bathroom stall while a 9-year-old girl used the bathroom at the Durango Welcome Center. He’s scheduled for sentencing on Sept. 19.

If people encounter Tsosie, they should not approach him but call 911 to report his whereabouts and other relevant information, Bender said.
