M-CHS does well at Warrior

The Montezuma-Cortez High School relay teams channeled their inner warrior last Saturday in track and field action.

Two girls teams won their relay events, while one boys quartet took second at the Grand Junction Central, Warrior Invitational.

Amanda Gallegos, Imari Black, Rachel Demby and Katelyn Muzzy won the girls 4x400-meter relay for the Lady Panthers in 4:15.91. The team of Gallegos, Black, Randy Elliot and Tori Laymon also won the 800-sprint medley in 11:08.30. The wins helped the Lady Panthers to a fourth-place team finish with 81 points. Grand Junction won the team title with 166 points.

Other strong performances for the M-CHS girls came from Ashley Lingo. The senior again heaved her way to a first-place throw in the discus at 119-08. Lingo even took 10th in the shot put at 27-09. Teammate Elliot was third- and-eighth-place in the discus (104-01) and shot put (29-00.50).

Gallegos and Demby each took second- and-third-place in the 400-meter dash at 63.36 and 64.30, respectively. Black raced to a runner-up time of 13.24 in the 100.

Shaunnell Butler was busy for the Lady Panthers. She leaped to a third-place mark in the long jump at 14-05.25. Butler even came in ninth- and-eighth-place in the 100- and-300-meter hurdles at 20.31 and 59.17.

The Panthers placed eighth as a team with 23 points. Fruita Monument won the boys championship with 126 points.

Levi Carruth, Wiley Kirks, Ted Newcomer and Jaron Carver came in second in the boys 4x200, racing to a time of 1:37.27. Carver raced to a fifth-place time of 54.15 in the 400 as well.

Sui Theodore came in 10th- and-ninth-place in the 110- and-300-hurdles at 21.19 and 51.27.

Leander Rockwell and Isaac Padilla threw the discus 117-07 and 104-10, which was good for eight and 10th.

M-CHS will next be at the Pine River Invitational in Bayfield on Saturday, April 14, at 9 a.m.
