Paul Black, center, owner of Pine River Hops, feeds hops into a portable harvester on Wednesday as Kevin Lombard, left, associate professor with New Mexico State University Agriculture Center, in Farmington, and Jim Hendricks help out in front of Steamworks Brewing Company. The hops were harvested at the Bayfield area farm and used to make Steamworks’ Colorado Proud Pale Ale, a beer that is made with exclusively Colorado ingredients.

Steamworks Brewing Co.’s limited production beer, Colorado Proud Pale Ale is set to be tapped on Friday.

The beer is made using ingredients exclusively from Colorado, including mountain spring water from the San Juan Mountains, barley grown in the San Luis Valley and malted in Monte Vista by Proximity Malt Company, yeast provided by the Brewing Science Institute in Woodland Park and Chinook and Cascade hops locally grown at Pine River Hops in Bayfield and harvested fresh at the brewpub on Aug. 23.

“Once picked and sorted we put the hops directly into the kettle,” said Ken Martin, Steamworks head brewer, in a news release. “This should ensure the freshest possible hop flavor and aroma for our Colorado Proud.”

The Colorado Proud Pale Ale, according to Martin, emphasizes hop flavor and aroma over bitterness, with an ABV of approximately 5.9 percent.

A statewide effort created in 1999 by the Colorado Department of Agriculture, Colorado Proud as an organization is designed to promote Colorado food and agricultural products and raise awareness of buying locally grown, raised or manufactured products.

Steamworks is located at 801 E. Second. Ave. in Durango. For more information, visit www.steamworksbrewing.com or call 259-9200.
