Garyn Knuckles was the honored recipient of Civil Air Patrols Billy Mitchell Award during a ceremony March 10, according to a written release provided by the deputy commander for the Mesa Verde Cadet Squadron. Awardees must pass comprehensive aerospace and leadership tests, drills, physical fitness tests, uniform and grooming regulations, and completion of a basic encampment. Earning all of the cadet enlisted achievements has resulted in the promotion to cadet officer. Cadet Second Lt. Knuckles is among the top 15 percent of all cadets nationwide to receive this prestigious honor. Receiving the rank of officer increases a cadets leadership responsibilities; therefore C/2nd Lt. Knuckles was also promoted within the Cortez C.A.P.s Mesa Verde Composite Squadron to the position of flight commander.
This award was established in honor of General Billy Mitchell, a World War II veteran, who is known for his contributions in the history of an independent Air Force, prediction of the attack on Pearl Harbor, and the successful bombing runs on German ships. Benefits that are associated with this award are advanced placement in the U.S. Armed Forces, advanced credit in the ROTC, C.A.P. scholarships for continuing education and special activity opportunities. All U.S. military academies look favorably at cadets that have received the Billy Mitchell Award.
C/2nd Lt. Knuckles plans to continue his C.A.P. membership and advance his rank. Future plans are to attend college and join the military after he graduates. Garyn is the son of Gary Knuckles (former USAF veteran) and Sally Knuckles of Dove Creek.
