12 Hours of Mesa Verde mountain bike race coming Saturday



The sixth annual 12 Hours of Mesa Verde, mountain bike endurance relay race, will be Saturday at Phil’s World near the Montezuma County Fairgrounds. Racing goes from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Grommet class open (18-under). All other categories/classes are full. Cortez BMX begins season



Welcome to another season of great Cortez BMX racing. We have an exciting schedule of racing planned this year, so get calendars ready. Racing is every Monday and every other Saturday (some exceptions apply for holidays). Some dates to remember are Saturday, gear swap/gate practice; 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Monday, May 14, first Monday race; sign in at 5:30 p.m. and racing at 6. Saturday, May 19, first trophy race (season opener); sign in at 9:30 a.m. and racing at 10. Saturday, June 16, Race for Life; sign in at 9 a.m. and racing at 10. Hospice of Montezuma golf tournament



The 11th annual Hospice of Montezuma golf tournament will be held on Saturday, May 19, with all proceeds going toward Hospice of Montezuma patient care. The tournament is a five-person team that must have at least one woman.

Registration begins at 11 a.m., with lunch being served at noon. The shotgun start begins at 1 p.m. Cost is $40 and includes lunch. Green fees and golf cart fees are extra. For more information, call Micah Rudosky at Conquistador Golf Course at 565-9208 or Ronda at Hospice at 565-4400.




City of Cortez coed softball, 5-on-5 basketball and sand volleyball



The City of Cortez is now taking registrations for Church League Softball. The season begins Thursday, June 7. Registration ends Wednesday, May 30. It’s $175 per team. This is a non competitive/leisure style of coed softball. No score is kept and no awards are given. Just plain old fashioned family fun. Register at the Cortez Recreation Center.

The City of Cortez is now taking registrations for men’s and women’s 5-on-5 basketball. Season play begins Monday, June 11. Registration ends June 7. This league fills up fast, so register early. It’s $200 per team.

The City of Cortez is now taking registrations for 6-on-6 coed sand volleyball. Season play begins Wednesday, June 6. It’s $75 per team. Registration ends Friday, June 1.

Bear Dance open softball tourney



The Bear Dance open coed softball tournament is set to take place the weekend of June 2-3, in Towaoc. It’s a $123 entry fee for early registration. Deadline to register is Tuesday, May 29. Spencer Posey memorial basketball tournament



The Ute Mountain Recreation Center in Towaoc will host the Spencer Posey memorial basketball tournament June 15-17. The men’s, double elimination tourney has a $300 entry fee that is due by Tuesday, June 5. Champions receive a cash prize, Pendleton Jackets and a trophy. Second place gets jackets and a trophy, while third place is awarded sweat shirts and a trophy. All players will receive a T-shirt. Certified officials will referee the tournament. 4 Corners volleyball camp



The ninth annual 4 Corners volleyball camp, hosted by Mancos High School and coach Ramona Shepherd, will be held June 18-20. The clinicians will again be Adams State College coach Lindy Mortensen and her Grizzlies volleyball players. Numbers have grown so much (75 last year and campers were turned away), that there is no more room in Mancos. The camp is moving to Cortez. High school players will be at Montezuma-Cortez High School and middle school players will be at Cortez Middle School. The cost per camper will be $90 this year. There is only have room for 100 campers, so early sign-up is important. For more information or a sign-up sheet, please call Shepherd at 560-1411 or Barb Chappell at 570-9990. Ute Mountain strongman competition



The second annual Ute Mountain Recreation Center, strongman competition, is set for Saturday, July 14, at the Ute Mountain Rec. Center parking lot in Towaoc. It’s a $10 entry fee, one open division and five competitions. The top score wins it all, which is a trophy, cash prize and dinner. Call Rob or Nick at 564-5360 for more information.




Cortez Leopard Sharks swimming



Come swim with the Cortez Leopard Sharks swimming team. The swim season has just started and registration is ongoing throughout the spring and summer swim season. Practices are currently being held at the indoor pool of the Cortez Recreation Center on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 5:30 p.m. If interested in joining the team, want to improve swimming and make new friends, please feel free to come by and observe a practice and talk with the coaches. Children and adults are welcome to join. Registration forms can be requested at cortezsharks@gmail.com, through the team’s Facebook page of Cortez Leopard Sharks, or picked up at the Cortez Rec. Center front desk. Further questions can be directed to the Board of Directors at 570-6698.




Open adult soccer
