The Lady Panthers throwers keep excelling the competition.
Seniors Laura Heaton and Ashley Lingo again took first in the shot put and discus at last weeks Grand Junction Tiger Invitational.
With heaves of 35-1 (Heaton) and 116-10 (Lingo), that secured a sixth place finish for the Lady Panthers track and field team out of 17 schools. Randy Elliott was third in the discus, throwing 105-9.
Amanda Gallegos was the runner-up in the 400-meter dash at 62.07. Katelyn Muzzy placed fifth in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 50.03.
Fruita Monument won the girls team championship.
M-CHS boys Leander Rockwell and Soren Jorgensen each tossed the discus and shot put 128-9 (eighth) and 40-9 (10th). The Panthers placed 15th as a squad.
Durango earned the boys team title.
SWL meet
M-CHS and Durango will cohost the 5A/4A Southwestern League meet on Friday and Saturday at Panther Stadium.
This is the first time M-CHS has ever hosted the league meet in head coach Bob Archibeques 36-year tenure. Teams participating are 5A schools Fruita, Grand Junction Central and Grand Junction. M-CHS, Montrose and Durango are the 4A schools.
Fridays schedule begins at 3 p.m., with the boys discus, high jump and long jump, and the girls shot put and triple jump (all of these field events are finals).
Running preliminaries begin at 3:30. Events are the girls 100-meter hurdles, boys 110-meter hurdles, girls 100, boys 100, girls 400, boys 400, girls 300-hurdles, boys 300-hurdles, girls 200 and boys 200.
Other finals races are the girls 4x800-meter relay, boys 4x800, girls 3,200-meter run and boys 3,200.
Saturdays schedule will start at 9 a.m. All events are finals. The day begins with the girls discus, girls high jump, girls long jump, boys shot put and boys triple jump.
Other finals follow, the girls 800-sprint medley relay, girls 100-hurdles, boys 110-hurdles, girls 100, boys 100, girls 4x200, boys 4x200, girls 1,600, boys 1,600, girls 4x100, boys 4x100, girls 400, boys 400, girls 300-hurdles, boys 300-hurdles, girls 800, boys 800, girls 200, boys 200, girls 4x400 and boys 4x400.
An awards ceremony will conclude the meet.
Individuals in 4A must finish in the top 18 of his or her event to qualify for state.
